1024x1024 is more appropriate considering most people will be running EL in 1024 width minimum, and 8bit colour is preferred for this anyways, as using only 256 colours really isn't as bad as you'd think when a good palette has been generated (as i just showed u irl krayon ;p) and makes the file 1/3 the size.

What would be best is if the client supported PNG's, or even JPG's.
Agreed sir.
Or not.  It would seem the Lands of War text looks especially ... degraded in 256.  But that's OK because the client supports gzip'd textures and we'll have the updater/installer all compressed anyway so it'll be coolies to use 24bit.

I will see what I can do about getting the client to properly support PNG too Wink

Give them time to load, they are huge. Smiley
Hence why I suggested compressing them Wink

best for now to maintain full compatibility with the original EL one.

So yes, 1024x1024, and also, probably importantly: make it an 8bit (256 color) bitmap.

so when exporting the image for usage in the client you need to convert to an indexed mode.
Nope, 800x600 works fine and is therefore "compatible" I would think.

Nope, 24 bit colour also works and is therefore "compatible".

EDIT1: See pwned below
EDIT2: Ha HA!  I disagree again later Wink

Also on a not so positive note, it dosnt work, not the one that has the new text, atleast not for me. There are only two reasons i can come up with why, the original el background was 1024 by 1024, this is 800 by 800. Another reason is the original el file was a bmp, your file is a jpeg.  The one I made for myself worked.

Ps i think this is my fualt, when I uploaded my picture to photobucket it automaticly made it a jpg, use my download link instead.
Yeah you'll probably need to convert it back to BMP :S

Hopefully EndorVaeros can get the BMP version, put the text on, and shuv that up (although in a ZIP/TGZ/RAR/ACE/7z so it's not HUGE).

In the meantime, you can simply do this on Linux:
  convert login_back.jpg login_back.bmp

On Windows, you'll have to jump through 400 hoops Tongue

OK, OK you can probably open in MSPaint and save as BMP maybe.

Yeah I'm 99% sure it'd work through the update method we are using now for the other files.
OK... now I'm no longer trippin' out I can say that the update method we are using still overrides EL files, just doing it at a user level (thereby not modifying the official EL files).  The new client we will have soon will have it's own data directory and it's own user level data directory so it'll all be good.

One that says "Lands of War" would be good too, although i don't know if we'll ever be doing 2 separate clients for each server... probably not tbh (krayon?)... maybe putting both "Timeless Era" and "Lands of War" on the image would be good...
I think for most flexibility we'll have the QELServ client, with it's data directories, and it's user level update directory, but there'll be a way for each server to overload files etc.

I aim to please. Cheesy Must be re-named login_back.jpg

In short, we will have separate banner per server, so we need to have one with Lands of War where the Timeless Era name is.  I love the blood splat for it too! Cheesy  Can you perhaps make it slightly darker or something to make the text stand out more?  One could modify the black part of the text but then it'd have to be modified anywhere you've used that text :/
22  General Discussion / Suggestions / Re: SPEEED amulet on: 2010-01-30 13:09 (Sat)
1. ANY AND ALL breakrates are currently preliminary, some of them are still set to figures we put in place just to test that the breaks system was working.
Correct.  Further the SPEEED amulet is even named something funny because it too was only created to test something (specifically the buff system).  It was never designed to be left in game as kavvie said however there's probably no reason we COULDN'T have it ... except for TE maybe where ideally I wanted riding horses to have a point (such as getting from A to B faster).

3.
Hally Spell- When you have all 3 componets of the hally set, Hally, Hally ring, and hally med: you can combine all the increases and decreases into the Hally, MAKING IT THE ULTIMATE BLU EYES...........uh <insert cool name>
Having "THE ULTIMATE" anything is exactly the opposite of what's trying to be achieved.
There will be no equivalent to EL's Bronze Sword in QELServ, ever.
\o/ YAY!

For me it does show up for el main and qel but thats only because I don't know how to make it show up for Qel only cuz i changed the file in eternal lands textures that was login_back.bmp because thats the only way I know how to do it. Im sure there are other ways tho that would make it show up for only qel
Yeah I'm 99% sure it'd work through the update method we are using now for the other files.

I forgot to mention, I do like it a fair bit myself except the "QELServ" bit, but that's OK anyway as we'd probably have Timeless Era/Lands of War text as it appears in the logo(s) there instead.
24  General Discussion / General Topics / Re: New login background on: 2010-01-29 18:11 (Fri)
Nice.  When you run Eternal Lands (connecting to main EL server) does that background show up too?
Most likely not if you put the files in the UPDATES for qelserv.

If so, maybe we could get the EL install file, tweak it (add QEL data) and re-package it.  Have it install to C:\Program Files\QELServ\ ... and everything.
QELServ will soon have it's own client (with installer etc) however it will NOT contain the EL data due to licensing issues.  Whilst the client is open source (of a sort), the binary data is not.

Not sure if that would work, I've never packaged anything to be run through an installer.  What do you guys think?  This way all data is separate.
See above, however the data is still separate at the moment, using the update method described above.

it 's taken from underground cuz i swapped it with first map to test it Wink
There r krayon01's map monster and me:(underwater)

Hopefully the Quadronyx Map Centre ( http://qelmapcentre.quadronyx.org/ ) will be up and running soon :S  It is designed for map makers to test their maps quickly and easily, as it would appear in game.

collision system?
He's referring to navigation around other players, NPCs and creatures.  At the moment the path finding does not take other entities into account.  I have some plans for an avoidance system that should avoid most unnecessary pauses when walking (hopefully even better than ELs one where you stop and stand there for a moment while your character and the other decide what they are doing).
27  General Discussion / Suggestions / Re: Combat on: 2010-01-23 07:36 (Sat)
What EV said Smiley
Yeah I think at this point it's beyond this project even if we DID want to do it due to the client limitations.

monsters with some more basic AI that will give chase when they see u from a distance but you wouldn't be 'engaged in combat' until they came X close.

I like that idea Tongue
Is this how EL works atm?  Because basically that's how I was going to make the run of the mill aggressive creatures.  Having said that, I want more intellect in them in general so they might not "chase" you if you are travelling with friends or whatnot Wink

Of course then there's the enemies that'll be Gnomes, Dwarfs, Elves and the like Wink  They will be much more intelligent and chase, heal, flee and work as teams etc.
28  General Discussion / Suggestions / Re: Combat on: 2010-01-21 18:07 (Thu)
Then, when I started thinking about the elements, i thought about buffering up dmg.

Fire- Ur weapon as a fire surrounding it, increasing ur dmg

Water- Ur flexibility increases, causing you do dodge more

Air- You surround your weapon with the sharpness of air, causing your critical dmgs and chances to increase

Earth- The heart of earth is in ur heart (bit repative) causing your toughness to increase
Self explanatory for what the essences r needed.

These would last until you ran out of mana (so like maybe use 1 mana every second or something) or can use like 50 mana, and last 60 seconds.

Then for Ranging: (I guess these would be spells, or abilities when wearing a bow, idk)

Fire: You coat the arrow with fire, increasing its dmg

Air: Air surrounds your arrow increasing its speed and sharpness, this allows you to have a 50% to critical hit your opponet

Water: Can't really think of anything for water

Earth: same for earth

Well, What do joo think?
There were thoughts of having weapons modified by element type stuff either whilst in use by the wielder or perhaps beforehand by some kind of alchemist or something.

I too love the elemental stuffs and luckily even without modification the client has some blue, red, yellow and purple weapons which fit nicely with water and fire (and less so earth and wind/air respectively).

As always keep the suggestions coming! Cheesy

Gear from quests

I like the idea of gear from quests...
As Korrode said this was discussed and I too think it's not a bad idea.  For TE I was hoping we could have questing as a complete ALTERNATIVE to grinding in general however.  This would probably mean that THOSE quests at least would exist for the gaining of XP more so than a special drop.  Ideally someone not into quests could simply go grind for an hour and get their 5k xp or whatever, whilst someone doing a quest for an hour get's rewarded 5k xp.  That was the idea I was tossing around anyway.

Boss

A boss that spawns every hour or so...
That's pretty cool.  For LoW this could possibly work quite well.  Really easy to implement too Tongue

Dungeons

Dungeons, like instances, ...

Parties/Groups

When in a party/group the exp would be split
See above link and this image: http://qelserv.quadronyx.org/serv/media/party01.png

That was a screeny from September 2007 where I was testing out a simple interface for partying up.

Regarding the shared XP, whilst I like the idea of sharing in general, I don't really like the idea of a high level player rushing a low level through by partying.

Shared drops was always a given of course, though I was thinking of dropping multiple bags.  Maybe the idea of the items being distributed somewhat more automatically might be an idea.

Dieing

When dead, you don't automatically appear at the beam....
For TE at least, I was toying with the idea of you becoming translucent like a ghost type thing on death.  Almost entering an near identical world/realm of the dead, yet you are still "there" (amongst your party mates or whatever).  You could then be magically revived right where you stand.  It could potentially be a valid state to be in to, as you could move around without fear of creatures attacking.  Of course there could be some special "dead" creatures that only exist in that realm hunting you also Wink

The main reason I thought of all the above was because there's no body models and we (as yet).
