Title: Question
Post by: daiske12 on 2010-01-27 07:32 (Wed)
Well, I just got a virus a few days ago, and my dad had to reinstall Windows XP, and i'm puzzled on how I got the virus. The only thing I remember I knew I installed (maybe something was installed that I didn't know of) was QEL.

Do you think I got the virus from this?

Yes.  Bad Korrode!  >:(

Not really.  I'm positive it was something else that was downloaded.  What anti-virus program do you use?

You didn't get it from QEL.

There are a million ways a computer running Windows can get a virus. Just having it connected to the internet at all is a risk in itself. I'm an I.T. consultant IRL, i know. ;p

The QELServ installer does not contain any malicious software (viruses, etc.). Anyone with a little computing know-how can easily extract the files from the installer and see everything that comes with it, and view the batch file it runs to install and see what it does for themselves.

I suggest running and keeping up-to-date good anti-virus software.
Avira AntiVir is good, keeps itself up-to-date automatically and is free for personal/home use:

...and I suggest running a web browser other than Microsoft Internet Explorer. Such as Firefox:

(...or Google Chrome, Opera, etc... any of them are much safer than IE)

i had no suspicions, just wanted to assure myself.

But yea, I was on website (can't remember) and Internet explorer popped up, don't know how, and then BOOM!, a day after that, I get viruses.

Windows Sucks, Apple Rules.

Unix is great for some things.. as soon as they start releasing games with Linux support (not just apple/windows) I'll be making the switch :P
