hang on hang on... all you did was change the extension by renaming the file? you didn't open it up in some software and re-save it as bmp? edit: @krayon lol masohp's discovery is quite right, the client already supports loading PNG's for the login screen, it also supports loading JPG's The reason it works, (I've done this with other programs, not just EL) is because the client simply looks for the .bmp extension and loads that. It doesn't care "was it saved as a bmp". To most everything, an image file is an image file. The extension it was saved in is more of a matter of compression at time of saving than anything else. The only real problem is "specialized" files (like .psd which are more data files than image files). It's the same reason you can change a file from .txt to .html and it works fine. Both are text files, it's just a matter of how the computer and web browser are set to interpret the extensions. This is why Windows users get the "If you change a file name extension, the file may become unusable. Are you sure you want to change it." Not to sound like a fun-ruiner, but don't give the client credit for being able to load the images that were saved as another extension, then had the extension renamed. It really has nothing to do with the client.

I would like to add that *she* did not make them 800*800, that you can blame squarely on photobucket. Also, enjoy them in all their 8bit (256 color) goodness Background 1: Background 2: Background 3: Edit: Don't download these ones, I have them g-ziped... and these ones I have converted to pngs for faster load times.

Give it a sec if it doesn't load right away, BMPs are huge. It is ready to be put into your QEL\textures Folder tho. Will load another one with the Eternal War logo on it if people want it. Also, I am working on other UI things to kinda go with the new theme. Edit: Removed the image

Nice. When you run Eternal Lands (connecting to main EL server) does that background show up too?
If you currently use the same client for QEL that you do for the EL server, then YES, it will show up, because you have to overwrite the image file to get it to work. However, if you want to seperate the two, simply copy the EL folder, rename it, and be sure to update your shortcuts. Presto, new folder for QEL. (No, you don't have to run the installer again, that's just silly. ) @masohp: I like it, could you send me the image w/o the "QEL Serv" on it, so I can put the "Official name" on it, just like it looks in the banner?

I just didn't like it, I don't like being forced into fights and having to diss.
You don't really "run" away from fights. You can run, you are just still being attacked and being dmged by the mob/fighter which is following you.
Now, maybe thinking about small arenas, its a bad idea, but maybe this could be allowed in huge arenas where even if you run, you can still have a chance of dying.
#edit- Krayon, yellow could be wind
Being able to run while being attacked is a great idea in most other games where the maps are huge and where the combat system works differently. (Yes, I have played several different MMOs, and this game does have a different combat system). And please don't suggest just making maps bigger to compensate, that has already been discussed. Admittedly, though I have never played Runescape, in other MMOs where this is a possibility, fighter classes have the ability to stop their players from running away through various skills that they can only use so often (due to cooldown timers, endurance/MP, etc, depending on which game we are talking about). Because EL really doesn't have a set-up for such skills in the fighter class, or even really in the ranger class, it becomes a pain to implement, and we end up going back to the "fighters need to level magic" to get this to work... and from what I understand, this game is trying to do away with by making it more of a "class system." True this does encourage teamwork all-around, but why should someone who wants to PvP always have to travel with a mage just to prevent people from running in circles, or even out of the arena, scarfing healing potions and running back in? Also, if this were somehow implemented, there would have to be a new check (which may be a good idea anyhow) to prevent people who are in combat from switching maps. As it stands, there is little difference between the current system and the one you suggest. Since you don't have to hold down a button to continuously attack or constantly click for every attack you need to do, having to click on a diss ring is a minor step in the process. (True, you have to remember to have them in your inventory, and perhaps this in is where a lot of people's problem with the system lies... you run out of rings (or whatever else is implemented to do the same thing) and you are no longer guaranteed to flee.) Also, the argument that "PlayerX kills me before I can hit the diss ring" is equally flawed for this system, because if they can kill you before you can hit the diss ring, they will kill you before you can run away, too. Another problem with that idea is this: in most other games where this is implemented, you have the ability to catch up with the player, or run away faster. While true, this game has the medallion, there comes this problem... from what I have been able to see, this server is staying with EL's "Every race and class run at the same speed" (mobs not withstanding). If two people have this medallion, the attacker will never be able to catch up with the person that is fleeing. Although this can also be a problem with other games that give the ability to "sprint" away... there are a number of things they have done to balance this out to make it more fun and interesting. And finally... Even though I am not a PKer/PvPer... or even really much of an A/D specialist (my A/D on main is less than 30 ATM), I really hate the thought that people go into PK maps/arenas and want to be able to just run around in circles while scarfing healing pots (or getting healed from outside forces) so they can kill their opponent. While I admit, this is different in a "Team vs Team" environment, where you need to stay alive longer to ensure that the other team gets deader than yours... such battles do not usually take place in this world (correct me if I'm wrong), except for the sheer fun of it all.

Even if making a map that big were possible, it would severely bog down the systems of people who are barely able to play the game as it is. You have to keep in mind, the more items there are on a map, the longer it would take to load, as the way the maps load in the client now, they load every polygon, even if they are hidden underground. So, as it stands now, a map that big would just be murder on people's systems.

Development / Design / Storyline / Solonna: The history of a mysterious woman
|
on: 2009-10-05 03:26 (Mon)
|
I, Ocenyia, goddess of the Mages, have come down from the heavens to put into writing the truth about a particular elven woman to finally stop the rumors that some of my mages have been spreading. I shall deal with these Mages later.
Before I begin dispelling any myths that have come along, let first make it absolutely clear that I will not do this for just anyone, this includes my followers. Solonna is a special case, which the other gods and I have decided that it is time that people know the truth about her.
I have heard those that say that Solonna is a former goddess cast down from our ranks for sharing her knowledge with the mortals. This is simply not true. If we were to cast her our from our ranks for sharing knowledge, each of us would have to be thrown down, for each of us have directly helped and taught the mortals in their time of need.
I have heard it whispered that she is being punished for some transgression against the gods. This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Why would we punish someone with eternal life? This would only give them the chance to become more powerful than us and attempt to overthrow us. We have been very careful about this since Mother Nature was overthrown - a woman who makes Zain look calm and level headed by comparison.
The truth is Solonna has struck an agreement with the Gods. She wanted continuously summon more people to our world, as well as help those who required knowledge. In such, she also has attained a status impossible to attain by anyone else. She is a priestess to all the gods - her only purpose in doing so is to help people choose which god they desire to follow and turn them onto the proper path. She does not take offerings to any of the gods - we have dedicated priests for that.
Solonna will keep doing exactly what she is doing until which time she decides that she has had enough. Since the woman is very patient, I doubt this will be for quite some time.

Bigkav, You are right. The Decimator WOULD look much more upber on him. When I actually get individual screenies of all of them for thier "profiles" to go on the main page, I will give him that weapon. That screenshot was taken months and months ago and if that weapon was there when the screen was taken, I didn't see it.
I appreciate what you said about the job I am doing. When I get a bit more time, I will give everyone even more stories. ^.^
That being said, anyone tries to steal the names of my gods for their character names on the forums or ingame... and I will PK them. Be warned. ^.^

Looks pretty kickin, though I do wonder if the server name was/is going to stay Quadronyx EL Server...
I recall Krayon saying on a few different occasions that "Quadronyx" was a temporary name. That he wanted to give the server a real name eventually. BTW, I have shown this to him before postin git here. ^.^ Just wanting to know what everyone else thinks of it.

General Discussion / Suggestions / Possible Banner

After kicking some things around with Krayon, I have come up with this for a possible banner (and a name, woot!) for the site. Let me know what you think. In case you are wondering, the people in the banner are the gods from the story section. [Top row, left to right: Hyriss, Zain, Etos (and his wolf-summon)] [Bottom row, left to right: Ocenyia, Kovera, Amtus]

Development / Design / Storyline / Kovera
|

Kovera is a strong teacher and many even consider her a great leader. Many consider her to be the second most important of the gods. After all - if it not for Amtus her followers would find it difficult to make their items. She is even well liked by those that tend to forget of Amtus' importance to the world. After all - it is much harder to forget the smith that made your weapon and armor when you are in need of it than it is to remember that the smith needed someone to gather the materials. Even so, Kovera does not smite those that do not give her thanks - she considers it a necessary part of the "job" of being a god. There will always be those that are unthankful, and the way mortals deal with each other the unthankful usually end up with their fair share of punishments from other mortals. There is no need to further fuel the fires of hatred. To better understand the impact Kovera has, a follower of Zain offered his knowledge. I would call Kovera a weak god for her dealings in the mortal world, but her ways seem effective for her followers. The heavens only know why no one has tried to over-throw her yet. But regardless, her kind heart has lead to many advancements in the armor and weapons that myself and many of my brethren use in combat. I must admit, it would be rather difficult to slay dragons and foul beasts if Kovera would not be so generous with her information. So I guess everyone, even those who do not do combat, owe her a debt of gratitude. After all - if she did not help us with gifts of knowledge on how to make our weapons and armor, far less would become warriors and there would be far more beasts wandering about. And more beasts, means more of them start looking to us for their new food source.

Development / Design / Storyline / Hyriss
|
on: 2009-09-09 03:33 (Wed)
|
The energetic goddess, Hyriss, is well liked by most of her followers. This could be because of her energetic state, or perhaps because she is flexible in most things. She understands while there is only one real way to shoot a bow effectively, there are many ways of understanding how to do it. Simply put - it's not just a matter of point and shoot for everyone. Because she understands this, she knows and understands every different style of learning and if needed is capable of (and willing to) teach to anyone. When not working closely with Kovera to help her followers have better weapons, she travels the world in her elven form, interacting with her followers on a personal level. When she is traveling through the world to check, she avoids using any outward signs of her godly powers as it would tip people off to who she is, and it creates undue attention for her - who wants to personally interact with her followers to gain better understanding of them. To further elaborate on this goddess, we found an old scroll in the temple of Ocenyia, supposedly written by Hyriss herself. ...I wish all my followers to know that even as a god, I am not infallible. If there is something that could be done better, tell me. I will weigh each suggestion that comes my way carefully and decide if it is for the best of my followers. Even with that being said, mockery of my ways will not be tolerated. Warnings will be given but I will not tolerate mockery forever....
...Do not follow me by trying to be just like me. That is not how I gain my power. Striving to be just like a god often causes one to strive to become a god, and attempting to overthrow me is something I will not tolerate. A swift death will meet any who try to overthrow me, as Kovera herself forged my bow, and there is not another in all the land that rivals it.
But as I was saying, I gain my power through the strength of my followers, and I have found that my followers do not gain strength through striving to become like me. I find that my followers gain their strength by choosing their own paths. I would much rather have many followers of varying strength and ideals, than just a few followers of unquestionable strength and ideals. After all, diversity is what makes life worth living...
